Magazine Lesson Continued

Scale the image up in Photoshop so that image is 8 inches in the wide dimension. This will make the image blurrier. Ideally you would start with a large image. For the classroom scaling up is ok.

Using the pen tool in Photoshop draw a clipping path around the part of your photo that you want to use as your cover photo.

Save the file as a Tif or PSD file.

In Indesign, create a new letter sized document with a .5 inch margin and .125 inch bleed

Create a text box and type in your magazine title or place a title that you have downloaded and resized in Photoshop.

Create a text box and then type in or paste your main headline into Indesign.

Create two more text boxes and then type in or paste your teaser headlines

Hierarchy

The Main headline will be the most eye catching.

Use bold type and make it the largest in size

The teaser headlines will be smaller in scale. You can still use bold type, but make them stand out less than the main headline.

Methods of emphasizing type:

For all magazine headlines you want to use a bold font. Use a font that has thick letters.

Using ALL CAPS will also make the words stand out more.

Pick a type color that will contrast the most with the back ground. For example… Black on white or white on black. white on dark grey, or yellow on black….

For this assignment, use only two to three fonts. Make one font a serif font and another font a sans serif font. See previous lessons for the definition of Serif and Sans Serif. Alternate between these two fonts to create  variety, interest emphasis and meaning.

You may use a third special font for the main headline.

Graphic fonts are Fonts that look like images, They can be downloaded from the internet and installed in your computer.

You may also wish to use what is called a dingbat. This is a font that is an image an not a letter form.
