Analyzing an Image

1.  First Reaction

• What is your first impression?
• What captures your attention?
• What does the work bring to mind?
• How does the work make you feel?
• What does the work remind you of?

2. DescriptionWhat is happening in the work?

• What do you see? (landscape, photos, type, images, people, icons, is the work made on the computer or drawn by hand?)
• What is the story?
• What so you see that makes you say that?
• What clues are provided to tell you more about the subject?

3. Analysis & Interpretation

• What is the composition and how is it framed?
• How does the work evoke feelings ideas and image?
• How does the artist achieve this using the elements of design? Line, Color and Value, Texture, Space, Contrast, Hierarchy
• What do you think is the theme or subject of the work? Why?
• What message or meaning do you feel the work communicates
• What is the function of the work?

4. Judge and Evaluate

• Have your perception/feelings towards the piece changed?
• Does the work posses a high technical or conceptual skill?
• Is this an effective piece of work?
